Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty) in New Jersey

breast reduction image 1The most feminine of a woman's attributes are her breasts. Women with large pendulous breasts are often concerned with a variety of problems, from back, shoulder and neck pain, skin irritation underneath the breasts, to breathing difficulties, skeletal deformities and sometimes unsightly, painful grooves in their shoulders. Many women often also complain because they are uncomfortable with the unwanted attention that their breast size draws sometimes causing self-conscious issues.

For many women, the ideal procedure is a breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty allowing them to feel much more comfortable after surgery. Dr. Jill Hazen will not only reduce the size of the breast, but will sculpt and tighten the breast to give the best possible shape in proportion to the rest of the body.

THE PROCEDURE

Breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure which reduces breast size and volume by sculpting and tightening the breast to give the best possible shape in proportion to the rest of the body. It can also reduce the size of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple).

The specific method chosen for your breast reduction will be determined by your anatomy, and your desired results. Depending on the size of the breast there are several variations of techniques to choose from.

The most common technique involves around the areola, and vertically down the breast. The areola is reduced in diameter if needed and excess glandular tissue, fat and skin are removed. Subsequently the areola is lifted to its new higher position. The remaining tissues are reshaped around the areola to achieve the desired contour and size. The incisions are sutured and a dressing is applied. One of the most important questions in regard to the technique employed is your goals and expectations of the surgery. Items like size and shape of the breast will be fully discussed at the time of your consultation.

POSTOPERATIVE

Breast reduction surgeries are done as an outpatient procedure. This procedure is carried out under general anesthesia. You may feel some discomfort during the first couple of days, but this will easily be controlled by the use of oral medication.

For the first few days following breast reduction surgery, you will wear surgical dressings and a post-surgical bra. You should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for 2-4 weeks. With the support of your surgical bra, you should be able to increase your activity level at a steady pace. Most patients are able to return to work in seven days. Dr. Hazen will discuss all of this with you during your consultation.

Breast reduction surgery can help a woman regain her self-confidence and positive self-image, as well as provide the motivation to participate in a wide range of physical and social activities. Everyday activities such as exercise, climbing stairs; and side sleeping are all much more comfortable post surgery. Most women are excited to shop for clothes since they finally feel proportioned. Generally, women have more energy to live fuller lives after breast reduction.
