A Good Offense Is the Best Defense
The first line of defense in a skin rejuvenation regime includes medically based skin care products, microdermabrasions, and facial peels. According to Dr. Jill Hazen, “part of any strategy involving a more youthful appearance includes educating the patient about good skin care. Skin that’s in good condition looks younger – it’s such an important component”
Dr. Hazen prescribes a line of skin care products that can only be obtained through a physician. Microdermabrasions and skin peels also are an option in facial rejuvenation. Dr. Hazen uses light peels (glycolic acid and retinoic acid), as well as deeper peels (TCA). All of these peels provide a gentle layer of exfoliation and stimulate the growth of new cells and collagen for a refreshed look without downtime.
“Sometimes, as our faces age, we need to call in the reinforcements of injectables and lasers,” noted Dr. Hazen. Botox, an injectable agent to smooth wrinkles, is used on crow’s feet, forehead lines and those frown lines between the eyes. Restylane and collagen are injectable fillers which plump up the skin. They are used in the nasolabial folds, (the lines from the nose to the mouth), and to plump a thinning lip.
Dr. Hazen has many highlyspecialized laser machines, each designed to treat very specific conditions. One is very effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It greatly improves both the texture and quality of the skin with little or no downtime. One treats brown age spots on the face, body and hands, and another treats acne and acne scarring. Dr. Hazen also has a laser specific to treating broken blood vessels and rosacea.
If non-surgical procedures are not the answer, surgery is an option. Dr. Hazen is particularly excited about a newer procedure that offers the face a lift for those who don’t need fullface work, but are seeing the effects of time. “Midfacial Rejuvenation is a great procedure for those in the mid-40s to 50s, who are seeing the signs of aging start. This could be noticed as `jowling,’ or sagging cheeks.”
What makes this procedure ideal is that it is minimally invasive surgery. Using a very small incision along the hairline, and “suture suspension” techniques, the mid section of the face is gently lifted to improve facial appearance. “There are no scars in front of the ears, no heavy pulling of the skin,” Dr. Hazen adds. Midfacial Rejuvenation can be done under local anesthesia at Hazen Plastic Surgery P.A.. Recovery time is half of that of a full-face lift, perhaps as little as four days.
For patients who have excess skin and sagging, a mini-facelift is ideal. This procedure is also part of the new less invasive surgeries because there is very little down time, minimal scarring, and can be done in the office setting with a mild sedative. The results can achieve the effects of a full face lift, but with a natural, not tight, appearance.

Dr. Jill Hazen offers a non-surgical facial rejuvenation package using a multi-modal approach
Non-invasive treatments are becoming the fastest trend in cosmetic surgery. The multi-modal approach used by Dr. Jill Hazen of Hazen Plastic Surgery P.A., P.A, allows patients to experience a more youthful appearance in an afternoon, without downtime. In our 40s and 50s we complain that we are looking tired or grumpy, when in fact we are feeling wonderful on the inside. Through a combination of Botox CosmeticTM, Dermal fillers such as RestylaneTM or collagen, and Photorejuvenation laser treatments, patients can experience a transformation in the course of an afternoon.
According to Dr. Jill Hazen, as women age, specific changes occur to the skin and the bony facial structure. While these changes vary by individual, the majority of all women experience a loss of skin elasticity, loss of collagen and a more “squaring” of the face. It’s not unusual for women to see noticeable differences in their 40s. Early on, women can rejuvenate their faces with a combination of lasers, fillers and BotoxTM, and we are excited to offer a package of all three techniques so that women may experience satisfying results.
The lines that appear between our brows result from muscle movement and the passage of time. Botox CosmeticTM works by blocking nerve impulses, which reduce the movement of those muscles. With less movement, the skin surface smoothes out, and the moderate to severe frown lines between your eyes, forehead and crow’s feet begin to fade. The results last for approximately four months.
While BotoxTM is effective on the lines on the upper half of the face, the lower half of the face must also be addressed. The lines between our noses and mouth, called the nasal labial folds, cause us to look tired and sad. Dermal fillers, such as collagen and RestylaneTM can be used to fill those lines, providing a rejuvenated appearance.
The third segment in Dr. Hazen’s three step treatment is a full face photorejuvenation done with one of her state of the art lasers. Laser rejuvenation of the skin improves skin tone, minimizes fine lines, stimulates collagen and tightens laxity, giving skin a smoother, tighter look and feel.
This three step process can be completed in an afternoon, with minimal discomfort and expense, and patients will marvel at the transformation they have undergone through this combination of minimally invasive techniques.
