While you may receive plenty of compliments on your weight loss, the saggy skin on your arms isn’t going away – and it won’t, no matter how extensive the exercise regimen. The arms are one of the most stubborn parts of the body when it comes to weight loss and toning, and there is no way to exercise skin back to its former elasticity.
The same holds true if the droopy arm skin is due to aging. Removing all that excess tissue requires surgery. Patients can decide whether an arm lift or liposuction best suits their needs.
Below Dr. Jill Hazen of Hazen Plastic Surgery P.A. explains the options in detail.
Arm Lift
Those whose weight tends to fluctuate a lot are not good candidates for arm lift. However, for those patients who have reached and retained their ideal weight, arm lift creates a much firmer and tighter look. During the procedure, formally known as brachioplasty, the surgeon makes an incision underneath the armpit to the elbow. This results in minimal scarring. After removing excess skin and fat, the surgeon closes the incision.
For a week or so after surgery, swelling and soreness may occur. While arm lift patients shouldn’t lift any heavy items or engage in strenuous exercise for a few weeks post-surgery, they can participate in other normal activities.
Liposuction
When fat is more of an issue than sagging skin, liposuction can make the arms appear slimmer and aid in contouring. As with liposuction elsewhere on the body, the surgeon inserts a small cannula in the treatment area and removes the fat. Liposuction assures a natural look, and there is no scarring.
Patients can usually return to work a few days after undergoing liposuction. Expect some bruising and swelling in the arms for a few days post-treatment, but also expect to see a noticeable reduction in fat. The results continue to improve over the next several weeks.
For some patients, a combination of arm lift and liposuction makes sense. That holds true for those with especially problematic upper arm issues. When done together, the surgeon can tone and sculpt the arms for the best results.
